Why pearl pigment become more popular in wall paint

24 Nov 2020

During the Covid-19, people were forced to stay at home. More and more people begin to decorate their homes to make it warmer and more beautiful to improve the quality of life. In the past, many people would choose wallpaper wall cloth, but its construction is more complicated, and interior decoration coatings are easier, more flexible, and more effective.

The following is an introduction to the application of pearlescent pigments in coatings:

1. The application of pearlescent pigments in coatings:

Paint can be divided into: water-based paint (water as the medium)

Oil paint (solvent as medium)

Powder coating (no medium)

The formula talks about the number of copies, and the number of copies is different from the percentage.

The number of parts is based on the main solids (such as pigments, resins, etc.). The pigment or resin is taken as 100%, also called 100 parts. Coatings and all materials that need to be formulated are formulated using parts. The cosmetic formula is also proportioned by the number of parts.

Coating preparation process: The general amount of pearlescent pigment is 4-15 parts.

Process: formula making → wetting, dispersing → mixing

When preparing water-based or oil-based paints, generally do not add pearlescent pigments first, mix and prepare the paint, then wet the pearlescent pigments, pre-disperse with the prepared paint, and then add to the prepared paint and mix well.

The particle size and composition of natural mica and synthetic mica are different. Pearlescent pigments with large particle size have sedimentation. A certain amount of flocculant can be used, and it needs to be stirred evenly during on-site construction to ensure the consistency of the coating hue.

The pearlescent pigment has the pearlescent effect only when the orientations are parallel. Therefore, construction is more suitable for advanced coating methods such as spraying and electrostatic spraying. When painting with a spray gun, the recommended viscosity of the paint is about: NO4/15~30 seconds. Use higher air pressure to ensure good atomization. Thin coatings are divided into multiple times, generally 2~3 sprays, each spraying requires There are intervals to facilitate solvent evaporation.

☆Water-based paint and oil-based paint:

1) Water-based paint: first add dispersant and alkali in the water to adjust the PH value to 8-9, mix and dissolve thoroughly, then add pearlescent pigment to disperse for a period of time, and then mix with other components to prepare the required paint. In water-based paint, the amount of pearlescent pigment should be at least 30 parts, and the pearlescent powder should be fully stirred for 1~2h.

The gloss of finished water-based coatings is not as good as oil-based, especially for automotive topcoats. This is a research direction and it may be the reason why oil-based coatings cannot be replaced.

2) Oil-based paint: When used in oil-based paint, the surface of the pearlescent pigment will absorb a small amount of water, so the surface of the pearlescent pigment needs to be treated with lipophilicity. Generally, it is coated with a silicon coupling agent. The coating amount is 0.5-1% to make the pearlescent The surface of the pigment has lipophilic properties and is well compatible with the resin in the paint.
