What Makes PET Glitter Powder Solvent Resistant?

Solvent resistance in PET glitter powder is not determined by the PET substrate alone. PET provides the primary film structure, but organic solvents can still interact with and penetrate the polymer. Research on acetone sorption in PET has shown diffusion and polymer structural relaxation, with solvent transport influenced by factors such as concentration, crystallinity, free volume and processing history.

The surface structure of PET-based materials can significantly change this behavior. In one study, an SiOx coating increased the barrier of PET film to methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) by approximately 7–8 times at 25°C.[1] Other research has shown that exposure to organic solvents can induce structural changes in unprotected PET, while protective surface layers can improve solvent-barrier performance.[2] These findings support a broader principle: solvent resistance depends on the complete PET-based structure rather than on PET alone.

Polymeric surface layers can further influence chemical resistance. Studies of polyurethane-acrylate coatings have associated higher crosslinking density with improved chemical resistance. In a solvent-resistant glitter powder, the combined behavior of the polyester substrate and surrounding polymeric structure therefore governs how readily solvents penetrate the flake and affect its structural or optical integrity. This is why solvent resistance is better understood as a property of the complete multi-component structure rather than an inherent characteristic of PET itself.
