How to make a food grade thermochromatic pigment water cups - color changing cups when exposed to cold

In the field of color technology, the cold color-changing cup has become a new favorite in the market with its unique heat sensitive color-changing characteristics. iSuoChem Company, as a leader in this field, now takes a PP color-changing cup as an example to analyze its professional production process in detail.

First, we choose transparent PP material as the base material of the color-changing cup. Subsequently, add an appropriate amount of food-grade diffusion oil to bring the surface of the PP material to an ideal moist state. This step is crucial, as it ensures that the subsequently added thermochromatic pigment (thermochromic pigment) can be evenly distributed to achieve the best color-changing effect.

Next, we added the 22-degree blue-to-green thermochromatic pigment powder into the PP material according to a strict ratio (Here, we recommend an addition ratio of 0.48%-0.85% to ensure a stable and long-lasting discoloration effect.). 

After adding the thermochromatic pigment powder, we need to stir the mixture thoroughly.

After stirring evenly, we add 0.48%-0.85% diffusion powder to the mixture and mix again. The addition of diffusion powder helps to improve the uniformity and brightness of the color-changing effect, making the color-changing cup more attractive.

During the mixing process, we need to pay attention to the fact that equipment such as internal mixers, kneaders, and high-speed dispersers cannot be used to avoid damaging the microcapsule particles and affecting the discoloration effect. Therefore, we usually mix by hand or at low speed.

Once mixed, we dry the mixture to remove excess moisture and volatiles. Then, you can enter the injection molding stage.

Blue to clear thermochromatic pigment

In the injection molding process, the injection temperature is a very important indicator. Since Thermochromatic pigment is a functional microcapsule particle with a particle size between 3-8 microns and can show different colors as the temperature changes. Excessive temperature will cause the microcapsules to rupture and the toner to be burned, thus affecting the color-changing effect. Therefore, our recommended injection molding temperature should be controlled within 200 degrees Celsius. At the same time, in order to obtain better injection molding effects, we also need to shorten the injection molding time as much as possible to avoid the material from being heated in the mold for too long.

In addition, in order to achieve the best discoloration effect, we recommend avoiding the use of any white pigments or additives such as calcium carbonate in the plastic material to avoid interfering with the discoloration effect.
