What Is Pigment Blue 15 (PB15)?
Pigment Blue 15 (PB15) is a family of synthetic organic blue pigments based on copper phthalocyanine (CuPc). Commonly known as phthalocyanine blue, PB15 is widely used in printing inks, coatings and plastics. Copper phthalocyanine is one of the most important organic blue pigments and can exist in several crystalline forms, with the α- and β-forms being particularly important in commercial pigment applications.[1]
PB15 is therefore not limited to one single physical form. Different commercial designations, including PB15:1, PB15:2, PB15:3 and PB15:4, are associated with differences in crystal form and pigment stabilization. In general, α-type copper phthalocyanine pigments produce a relatively redder blue, while β-type pigments give a greener blue. Crystal structure, particle characteristics and stabilization also affect color strength, dispersion and flocculation behavior, which is why different PB15 grades can show different performance even though they belong to the same copper phthalocyanine pigment family.[1][2]
FAQ
1. What precautions should be taken when handling Pigment Blue 15 powder?
Avoid generating or inhaling pigment dust during handling. Use adequate ventilation and appropriate personal protective equipment, such as protective gloves and safety goggles. Respiratory protection is recommended when handling large quantities or when ventilation is insufficient.
2. Can Pigment Blue 15 dust create a fire or explosion hazard?
Fine PB15 powder can form combustible dust-air mixtures under certain conditions. Keep the material away from ignition sources, flames and sparks, and take appropriate precautions against static discharge and excessive dust accumulation.
3. Is Pigment Blue 15 classified as dangerous goods for transportation?
PB15 grades covered here are classified as non-hazardous for common land, marine and air transportation. Normal industrial packaging and transport precautions should still be to keep containers secure and prevent accidental release.
