This organic pigment red 81 exhibits excellent solubility and fluorescence properties: it exhibits red fluorescence (green fluorescence) in water and red fluorescence in ethanol. It turns yellow in concentrated sulfuric acid and returns to red upon dilution. Its chemical structure is identical to C.I. Basic Red 1 (phosphomolybdate), and addition of sodium hydroxide produces a bright red precipitate.
