How Does Glitter Create Its Sparkling Effect?

For conventional reflective glitter such as silver PET glitter, the sparkling effect is produced mainly by directional reflection from flat, reflective flakes. When a flake has a suitable orientation relative to the light source and observer, it can direct a strong reflection toward the eye and appear as a bright point against the surrounding surface.[1]

A glittered surface contains many flakes with different orientations. At a given illumination and viewing geometry, some flakes produce clearly visible highlights while others reflect light away from the observer. As the light source, viewing direction or surface position changes, different flakes become prominent, creating the characteristic changing pattern of sparkle.

The visibility of these highlights is not determined by reflectivity alone. Research on flake-based effect materials shows that flake size, illumination conditions and the optical properties of the surrounding medium can all influence whether individual reflections are perceived as sparkle.[2] Application conditions that alter flake orientation or optical contrast can therefore change the resulting appearance. For formulators using reflective glitter in coatings, printing inks or other decorative systems, controlling these factors helps maintain a more predictable sparkle effect.
