iSuoChem® chameleon pigment is a mica-based effect pigment that creates a dynamic color shift as the viewing angle and lighting change. Also known as chameleon mica powder, color changing mica powder, color shift mica powder or chameleon pigment powder, it is available in multiple shades and particle sizes for coatings, plastics, printing inks, epoxy resin and decorative applications. Fine grades provide a smoother effect, while coarser mica pigments create stronger sparkle. OEM chameleon mica powder, samples, technical data and customized packaging are available.

How Does Chameleon Mica Powder Shift Color?
Chameleon mica powder produces color travel through a controlled optical structure formed on transparent mica platelets. One or more optically controlled metal-oxide layers are deposited onto the mica surface. In multilayer grades, materials with different refractive indices may be combined to create a stronger angle-dependent effect.[1]
When light reaches the coated platelet, part of it is reflected at the outer surface, while another part enters the optical layers and is reflected at the interfaces below. These reflected light waves interact through thin-film interference, strengthening selected wavelengths and reducing others.[2]
Changing the illumination or viewing angle changes the optical path difference between the reflected waves. As a result, different wavelengths become dominant at different angles. The pigment does not chemically change from one colorant into another; instead, its apparent color changes with the lighting and viewing geometry.
The coating materials, layer sequence and optical thickness largely determine the pigment’s intrinsic reflection colors and color-travel characteristics. However, the finished appearance is also influenced by platelet orientation, particle-size distribution, pigment loading, binder transparency and refractive index, film thickness, substrate color and processing conditions.
A black or dark background often increases the contrast of semi-transparent color-shifting pigments by reducing competing background reflection. The influence of the base color varies with pigment grade, loading and film structure. The selected chameleon mica pigment should therefore be evaluated in the customer’s actual coating, ink, plastic or resin formulation before production approval.
