What Is Calcium Sodium Borosilicate in Glass-Based Pearlescent Pigments?

Calcium sodium borosilicate can be used in the form of transparent glass flakes as a substrate for glass-based pearlescent pigments. For interference pigments, smooth and relatively uniform platelet surfaces are important because substrate morphology and thickness consistency affect the quality of the resulting optical effect. Research on glass-flake interference pigments has demonstrated that suitable glass flakes can be coated with TiO₂ to form this type of layered pigment structure.[1]

The glass substrate does not simply supply the visible color. Instead, it provides the transparent platelet geometry and optical interfaces on which the metal-oxide coating is built. When light reaches the coated platelet, reflections from different interfaces travel different optical paths and interact through thin-film interference. The refractive indices of the materials, optical layer thickness and viewing geometry therefore help determine the reflected interference color.[2]

AS9835B uses calcium sodium borosilicate as its principal listed component, together with titanium dioxide and a small amount of tin oxide.
