Quality Control and Batch-to-Batch Consistency of AS980-R5 Glass-Based Pearlescent Pigment
To maintain consistent color and optical appearance from batch to batch, each production batch of AS980-R5 glass-based pearlescent pigment is applied to a color card using an automatic applicator and compared with a standard sample. Visual and colorimetric evaluation is also included in the product specification to verify conformity before shipment. For selected applications, our laboratory can simulate customer processing conditions according to specific requirements to further evaluate the pine green interference effect and overall appearance. These quality-control procedures help support consistent performance of the interference pigment powder while providing practical assistance for customer R&D, sample evaluation and ongoing bulk orders.
What Is a Glass-Based Pearlescent Pigment?
A glass-based pearlescent pigment is a layer–substrate effect pigment that uses thin glass platelets as the supporting substrate for an optical metal-oxide layer, commonly based on high-refractive-index materials such as titanium dioxide. In this type of structure, the glass substrate has a lower refractive index than the optical coating. When incident light reaches the coated platelet, portions of the light are reflected at different optical interfaces while other portions pass through the optical layers. The reflected components travel different optical paths and can interfere when they recombine.[1]
This optical interference distinguishes pearlescent pigments from conventional colored pigments, whose color is governed mainly by selective absorption and scattering. The wavelengths strengthened by interference depend on factors including the refractive indices and thickness of the optical layers. Changing the metal-oxide layer thickness can therefore produce different interference colors. Research on modern effect pigments also identifies borosilicate glass as a substrate capable of producing particularly intense and pure interference colors.[1][2]
AS980-R5 belongs to this glass-based pearlescent pigment category. Its specification identifies calcium sodium borosilicate together with titanium oxide and tin oxide, and describes the finished pigment as producing a special flash diamond pine green effect.

Particle size plays a major role in how a pearlescent pigment appears in the finished application, influencing whether the effect is smooth and satin-like or more visibly sparkling. This guide compares fine, medium and coarse pearl pigment grades and explains how micron range affects sparkle, coverage and application suitability. For buyers evaluating AS980-R5 glass-based pearlescent pigment, whose specification lists 80% of particles within the 50–200 μm range, the article provides useful context for understanding how particle size contributes to its pronounced pine green interference and diamond-like visual effect.
