How Does Strontium Aluminate Glow in the Dark Powder Work?
For coatings, inks and plastics, strontium aluminate glow in the dark powder functions as a persistent photoluminescent pigment rather than a continuously powered light source. Its SrAl₂O₄ crystal host contains Eu²⁺ luminescent centers, while Dy-associated sites and native crystal defects contribute to the charge-trapping system.[1]
When the green glow powder absorbs light within an effective excitation range, charge carriers move to higher-energy states. Some produce immediate luminescence, while others are temporarily captured by traps in the crystal. After the light source is removed, these carriers are gradually released through thermally assisted detrapping and related charge-transfer processes. Their subsequent recombination at Eu²⁺-related centers produces the visible green afterglow.[2]
Because the stored charge is released progressively, glow powder brightness decreases over time. Measured performance depends on the excitation conditions, charging duration, temperature and measurement delay.
