How Does FCP35 Violet Glow in the Dark Powder Work?

For coatings, inks and plastics, FCP35 violet glow in the dark powder functions as a persistent photoluminescent pigment rather than a continuously powered light source. The product is based on a SrAl₂O₄ strontium aluminate host containing europium and dysprosium, consistent with the composition specified for FCP35. Within this type of persistent phosphor, Eu²⁺ acts as a luminescent center, while Dy-associated sites and native crystal defects contribute to the charge-trapping system.[1]

When the violet glow powder absorbs light within an effective excitation range, charge carriers move to higher-energy states. Some contribute to immediate luminescence, while others are temporarily captured by traps within the crystal. After the light source is removed, these trapped carriers are gradually released through thermally assisted detrapping and related charge-transfer processes. Their subsequent recombination at Eu²⁺-related luminescent centers produces the persistent afterglow characteristic of strontium aluminate phosphors.[2] For FCP35, the product specification identifies both its daytime appearance and glowing color as purple.

Because the stored charge is released progressively, the brightness of this glow dust powder decreases with time after excitation. Measured afterglow performance depends on factors such as excitation conditions, charging duration, temperature and measurement delay.
