How Does Green Pearlescent Pigment Create Its Pearl Effect?

Green pearlescent pigment creates its distinctive appearance through thin-film interference within plate-like pigment particles. In a mica-based pearlescent structure, transparent mica provides the flat substrate, while titanium dioxide forms optical interfaces with a different refractive index. When light reaches the particle, part of it is reflected at the outer interface and part travels through the coating before reflecting from a deeper interface.[1][2]

Because these reflected waves travel different optical paths, they recombine with different phase relationships. Constructive interference strengthens selected wavelengths, while destructive interference reduces others. This selective reflection produces the luminous color and pearl luster that distinguish green pearlescent pigment from conventional green pigment.[1][2]

AS4629 combines mica and titanium dioxide with Pigment Green 7. The mica and titanium dioxide structure generates the pearlescent reflection, while Pigment Green 7 strengthens the overall green tone. Reflections from multiple platelets add visual depth, and their directional arrangement produces the smooth, bright appearance associated with pearlescent green finishes.
