Pigment red 49:2 Molecular formula

This organic pigment red 49:2 belongs to the monoazo lake class of organic pigments, containing an azo group and a calcium salt complex in its chemical structure. It has a density of 1.6 g/cm³, a pH of 7.5, and a molecular weight of 774.90. It exhibits a distinctive reddish-purple color in concentrated sulfuric acid, which transforms to a reddish-purple solution upon dilution and produces a reddish-brown precipitate, a characteristic that serves as its distinguishing feature.

Pigment Red 49:2 exhibits good baking stability and weathering resistance, but its heat resistance is limited, limiting its application in plastics. Resinification can reduce copper sheen, and specialized formulations significantly enhance its suitability for use in water-based systems. Twenty-eight commercial formulations are currently available.

This red organic pigment is slightly soluble in hot water, ethanol, and acetone, with low solubility in sodium hydroxide solution. Its ethanolic solution turns a brownish-purple color upon addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid, but the color remains stable upon addition of sodium hydroxide, demonstrating excellent chemical stability.
