Why Can PLA Biodegradable Glitter Look Similar to PET Glitter?

PLA biodegradable glitter can produce a PET-like sparkling appearance because the polymer substrate is only one part of the glitter structure. Conventional glitter commonly consists of a polymer-film core combined with a reflective aluminum layer and additional surface layers. The reflective layer and flat flake structure play important roles in producing the bright, directional reflections associated with glitter, rather than the PET substrate alone.[1]

PLA can also be processed into highly transparent films. Research on the optical properties of PLA shows that amorphous PLA can provide high visible-light transmission, allowing it to serve as a transparent substrate for layered decorative materials.[2] When this transparent PLA film is combined with reflective components and precisely formed glitter flakes, the resulting material can reproduce many of the familiar visual characteristics of conventional PET glitter.
