Pigment Red 122 Quality Assurance and Packaging
Why Can Different PR122 Grades Perform Differently?
A PR122 designation does not guarantee identical performance in a printing ink formulation. Although different products may share the same C.I. Pigment Red 122 identity, their practical behavior can still vary with particle aggregation, dispersion treatment and interaction with the formulation.
Particle and dispersion state are important factors. A study on waterborne Pigment Red 122 showed that different preparation methods produced different effective particle sizes, viscosities and dispersion behavior. Under the reported conditions, the phase-separation process produced a mean particle size of about 104.6 nm, compared with 166.7 nm for direct milling with dispersant.[1] This indicates that the physical state of PR122 in a dispersion can change processing behavior even when the pigment chemistry remains the same.
Pigment–dispersant interaction is another key variable. Recent research specifically on Pigment Red 122 found that changing the anchoring group of polymer dispersants altered their interaction with the pigment surface. Stronger interaction improved wetting and dispersion stability, demonstrating that dispersant chemistry can significantly influence how PR122 performs in a formulated system.[2] For B2B grade selection, the C.I. number should therefore be treated as the pigment identity rather than a complete performance specification. PR122 should be evaluated under the customer's actual resin system, solvent system, dispersion conditions and printing process before one grade is considered interchangeable with another.
FAQ About Pigment Red 122 (PR122)
How should Pigment Red 122 be stored?
Pigment Red 122 should be stored in a dark, sealed, cool and dry place. The product should be protected from prolonged air exposure and moisture, since powdered pigments can absorb moisture during storage. TDS PR122-EP
Can Pigment Red 122 be mixed with inorganic pigments?
Yes. The product documentation states that selected Pigment Red 122 grades are suitable for mixing with inorganic pigments. Compatibility should still be evaluated in the customer's final formulation before production use.
Is Pigment Red 122 classified as dangerous goods for transportation?
According to the supplied MSDS, Pigment Red 122 is listed as non-hazardous goods for land, inland waterway, marine and air transportation. MSDS PR122 R122-B17
